Music Shining Light into Darkness
Fans of the Durban Chamber Choir (DCC) are in for a treat this weekend. The DCC will hold a concert to celebrate the joy of choral singing which focuses on Music Shining Light into Darkness at St Thomas Church in Musgrave on Sunday, November 8, at 15:00.
Building on the success of its first two concerts in May and June this year, the DCC will present a carefully curated programme of music from Renaissance masters to modern jazz standards; Scandinavian composers to traditional isiZulu songs.
Joining the DCC as a special guest will be KZN Philharmonic principal trumpeter Yosuke Matsui. The highlights of the event include the accessible Ave Verum Corpus from Jenkins and the Sanctus by Sandström – almost plainchant in manner reminiscent of a body of sacred, unaccompanied vocal music used in the liturgies of the Western and Eastern Christian churches.
Setting the tone for the afternoon will be Barber’s lyrical neo-Romantic art song, “Sure on this Shining Night”. The choir’s conductor is the co-principal oboe and cor anglais of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and a commended organist Margrit Deppe. It is made up of voluntary members of all ages and from all walks of life, united in their love for choral singing. Tickets are available through Quicket in advance, or at the door for R120, concessions R80.
The Gee Jays at the Nutcracker

Durban get ready to tap your feet, sing along, and create unforgettable memories as The Gee Jays bring their interactive comedy show to the Nutcracker Theatre at Macnut Farm in Assagay on November 7 and 8.
Probably one of the longest-running comedy cabaret trio, Marion Loudon, John Didlick and Grant Bell, will take to the stage at 17:30 on Saturday and at 12:30 on Sunday. The trio has been performing across KZN since 1985 playing a mix of music from the 1950s through the 1990s, paired with tongue-in-cheek comedy, satire, and interactive sing-alongs.
The musical extravaganza like no other comes with a delicious two-course meal which will be served as part of the experience. The Nutcracker Theatre at Macnut Farm is a proud member of 1000 Hills Tourism and tickets for the show and meal cost R395. There is a cash bar on site.

Dark comedy brings light to Seabrookes

In association with The International School of Performing Arts third-year students, Macbob Productions is gearing up to add light to the Seabrookes Theatre with some dark comedy.
Yasmina Reza’s acclaimed dark comedy, God of Carnage will be staged on November 5 from 19:00 at the theatre at the DHS campus. The razor-sharp comedy features four of ISPA’s talented third-year musical theatre students: Damien Butt, Jenna van Eyssen, Khethukuthula Ngcobo and Skhulile Gwala, under the direction of Aaron McIlroy.
The play begins when two couples meet to discuss an altercation between their young sons. Determined to handle the situation like reasonable, well-adjusted adults, they attempt to resolve the matter politely. However, as the conversation unfolds, civility gives way to confrontation, old grievances surface, and the carefully constructed façades of adulthood begin to crumble.
With biting wit, uncomfortable truths and laugh-out-loud moments, God of Carnage explores the thin veneer of civilisation and asks just how far people will go when their pride, prejudices and personal frustrations take centre stage. To book your seat, tickets cost R150 standard and R120 for students and pensioners via Webtickets.
Remembrance Day commemorated

Armistice Day, better known as Remembrance Day, is commemorated on November 11, to pay tribute and honour the men, women and animals who have served in wars, and those who have died in the line of duty. Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed since the end of the First World War in 1918, when at 11:00 on the 11th day of the 11th month the guns on the Western Front fell silent after four years of horrific fighting. In SA, Remembrancetide commemorations are spearheaded by the South African Legion.
