Consider yourself nominated
Instead of downing a drink for the popular craze, Nek Nomination, donate blood in the Donate and Nominate campaign.
THE binge-drinking craze that has gone viral on social media called Nek Nomination has been getting some bad press lately and deservedly so.
Already there have been devastating consequences, including lives lost as young people around the world try to outdo each other with reckless drinking.
But Durban North Baptist’s @tap Community Centre team has decided (like others in South Africa) to ‘hack’ this craze and turn it around to positively impact the community instead.
The centre’s campaign is called ‘Donate and Nominate’ and has been modelled on a successful UK campaign which challenged university students to wise up and donate a pint of blood rather than downing pints of beer followed by doing something stupid.
Jan Marè, the recently appointed youth coordinator for Durban North Baptist Church said, “We cannot ignore the power of social media crazes like Nek Nomination to influence behaviour, but we can harness that power and challenge young people to do something that takes real guts instead, like donating a pint of blood, then nominate a buddy to do the same.”
Jan is a blood donor and he is nominating all local youth pastors to donate a pint.
The ‘Donate and Nominate’ campaign will launch on Saturday 12 April with a clinic at the @tap Community Centre. It will run from 8.30am to 1.30pm. Call Jennie or Joy on 031 563 0882 or SMS 082 497 9350.
The challenge has gone out, consider yourself nominated.
