Dubai couple dupes Broadway business owners
A couple posing as illiterate foreigners fleeces a Broadway business owner of more than R4000 just hours ago.
FRUSTRATED and annoyed was how Lynda Heystek described her Wednesday afternoon when a couple and their two children, posing as Dubai nationals, stole from her Broadway suit hire business.
“A man and woman, in their 40s, and two children between the ages of 10 and 12, came into my shop just before 2pm. The man told me they were from Dubai and that he was on the lookout for a suit,” Lynda said.
The man then tried on a suit, while his wife tried to get to the back of the shop where only staff is permitted.
“I told her that only staff is permitted there and she then turned around and walked to the front. Her husband then came to the counter to pay and asked about South African currency. He pulled out some notes and asked for help. He then asked what a R100 note looks like, but I didn’t have one in the till.
“I proceeded to the safe to get a note to show him only to see he was right behind me. Luckily my employee saw and chased him to the front.”
The couple and two children left the shop: “It all happened so fast, I don’t even know how much of my stock they took. I know for a fact the man left with a suit that retails for R4 000.”
Heystek warned other business owners to be cautious and pay attention as two other businesses reported that the same couple visited their businesses. One was robbed while the other reported that nothing was stolen.
