Robbers make off with thousands

Police urge homeowners not to keep large amounts of cash in their safes.

A SOMERSET Park resident had the worst possible start to his weekend after he was robbed by three armed men. The men wearing balaclavas and masks made off with more than R795 000 in jewellery and cash. The incident occurred at about 10.40am last Friday. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the Taunton Way resident was watching TV in his lounge when he heard a loud noise.

“As he approached the door he noticed three armed masked men. One of the men pointed a firearm at the homeowner and demanded he open the safe. He was pushed around the house while he retrieved the house keys. The men took R250 000 in cash from the safe and stole a number of items of jewellery. The total amount added up to R795 000,” he said.

This is the second house robbery on Taunton Way. Deokaran urged homeowners not to keep large amounts of cash in their safes. No arrests have yet been made
