Gateway cafe robbed of R10 000

Suspects disguised themselves as employees.

TWO men disguising themselves as Vida e Caffè employees subdued and robbed the manager of the popular cafe at Gateway Theatre of Shopping recently. The duo made off with R10 000 and were wearing Vida e Caffè caps and shirts. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the manager was busy at the till when the two men rushed him and tied him up using an apron.

“The incident occurred at about 5.45am and the manager didn’t take notice of the men until they ran at him. They managed to subdue him, tie him up and fled with the cash from the till. The manager was able to untie himself a short while later and called the police,” he said.

The incident occurred in the same week as the million rand heist at Browns Jewellers at La Lucia Mall. Five armed men held staff up at gunpoint and made off with more than R1-million worth of jewellery.
