Boy (9) shot in the leg

A young boy was allegedly shot in the leg, after he discovered two firearms stashed in a rubbish bin.

MYSTERY surrounds the recent shooting of a nine-year-old boy in Effingham, after he allegedly discovered two firearms stashed in a rubbish bin.

On Tuesday, 9 September at approximately 6pm, police responded to a reported shooting at Sim Place in Effingham. When they arrived at scene they were shocked to discover a distressed and terrified child, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg.

A witness pointed out the alleged shooter and he was promptly arrested. It has been alleged that the boy was accidentally shot when the man tried to take the weapons from him.

“At this point we are trying to identify the weapons, as we do not know where the guns came from,” said Lt Elvis Naidoo, Greenwood Park SAPS spokesman. Forensic ballistic tests will also be conducted to determine if the weapons were used in other reported crimes.

The boy was transported to Addington Hospital, and is currently in a stable condition. Naidoo confirmed that police are investigating cases of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms.
