World’s focus shifts to diabetes awareness

The KwaZulu-Natal health head of department stresses the importance of healthy living as the country celebrates World Diabetes Awareness Day on Friday.

IT IS World Diabetes Awareness Day on Friday, 14 November and according to KZN Health HOD, Dr Sibongile Zungu, diabetes has reached epidemic proportions.

But he said there are a number of ways it could be significantly reduced through the reduction of risk factors, early detection and timely treatment.
Dr Zungu urged those living with diabetes to maintain a healthy body weight, as well as eat small, healthy and regular meals.
He urged people to eat fibre rich carbohydrates and to include five portions of fruit and veg each day.
He said those with diabetes should limit fat intake and use healthier cooking methods. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of drinking six to eight glasses of water a day.
