Murder suspect hangs himself in holding cell

A man, believed to be involved in the murder of a Greenwood park woman, was found hanged in his cell on Wednesday, 12 November.

POLICE officers at the Greenwood Park station were met with a grisly sight when the body of a murder suspect was found in one of the station’s prison cells.

The 25-year-old man was found hanging from his cell’s window burglar guards on Wednesday afternoon. He was arrested on Tuesday under the suspicion of murder.

It is believed that the  man hung himself after he appeared at the Durban Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. After appearing in court, police escorted the suspect back to his cell at the station. A few hours later, at approximately 3pm, police discovered his body.

W/O Lutchman Singh, the acting spokesman for the Greenwood Park SAPS, confirmed that the Phoenix man was wanted in connection with the murder of a Greenwood Park woman.

“The suspect is believed to be one of three suspects involved in the murder committed in October of last year. He had been arrested on a previous occasion, released on bail and absconded from his hearing. He was rearrested on Tuesday thanks to the successful investigation of our detectives,” he said.

The woman was brutally strangled in her home, and it is believed that one of the suspects was a former lover.

An inquest docket has been opened for investigation at the Greenwood Park Police Station.
