Virginia FC junior teams end season on a high
For the U12A team, it was the second successive triumph in the league.
FOR Virginia United Football Club, consistency and continuity are two key factors. They’ve just ended their season on a high with the U10A, U11A and U12A securing their respective Durban Central Football Association (DCFA) league titles. For the U12A team, it was the second successive triumph in the league. Coach of the team, Mike Hatton, believes retaining his core group of players has been the overriding factor in helping them clinch the trophy.
“We’ve had the same group of lads since an U10 level, and it has shown out on the field. The team know their roles and know where they need to be and what to expect of each other. Talent may win games, but teamwork wins leagues and that’s what this club is about. We are extremely chuffed with the results and I’m confident we can go into next season maintaining a high level of competitiveness,” Hatton said.
Captain of the U12A squad, Calvin Davis, said he too was proud of his teammates.
“The spirit among the team is just fantastic. This season we were defensively solid and we conceded a few goals and upfront we managed to score more, which is always a major plus,” Davis said.
The Virginia Preparatory School pupil also scored more than 15 goals during the season, but insisted his individual statistics were far less important than what the team achieved.
“Our toughest rivals in the league is Westville and I believe we played our best game against them. We beat them 7-2 away from home and though they beat us in the return leg, I feel that was one of the best moments of the season.”
The U11A squad was even more miserly in their defence, conceding only six goals in their season. Losing just twice, the team from the North romped to another title.
“We gel really well and defensively, we are quite tight knit. I think we can win again next season. We just need to concentrate on our game and keep up the intensity during our training sessions,” said U11A player, Jason Ridsdale.
