THIRTY five years ago Allan and Margaret Hirsch opened what would become one of the biggest independently owned appliance, electrical and home furnishing retail stores in the country; Hirsch’s. The couple set up shop at 27 Umhlanga Rocks Drive in 1979. The store, at the time, was primarily an appliance and retail repair shop.

They moved out of the Umhlanga Rocks Drive store in 2001, business boomed and the Hirsch’s went on to open many more outlets around the country. In July 2014 they decided to re-open the store, their 18th branch, a trendy furniture, bed, and décor store that they called Hirsch’s Décor. Richard Hirsch, the managing director of Hirsch’s together with his parents and sister Luci, said: “We have come back to our roots! Hirsch’s is well established as an appliance and electronics retail specialist – and we have also built a reputation for selling top of the range, locally manufactured furniture. It made sense for us to open our very first bed, décor and furniture flagship store in Durban North, right in the heart of where we started.”
