Nearly 100 shacks destroyed by fire

Panic stricken residents try desperately to save their belongings.

A RAGING fire rippred through an informal settlement on Johannas Road in the Sea Cow earlier this morning. According to reports on scene, more than 90 shacks were destroyed in the inferno.

Robert Mckenzie, spokesman for Emergency Medical Service said  residents were in a frenzy trying to save their belongings and were carting items ranging from bed mattresses to clothing out of their dwellings to safety on the nearby road.

“Fire fighters managed to extinguish the blaze and continued to water down smouldering hot spots. Fortunately there were no injuries reported during the blaze or in its aftermath,” he said.

The circumstances surrounding what started the blaze is still being investigated.
