Armed men rob group on Glenashley Beach

Four people robbed at gunpoint in secluded part of Glenashley Beach yesterday.

A PICNIC on Glenashley Beach turned into a nightmare for four locals on Tuesday evening after they were robbed by three men, one of whom was armed with a pistol. The incident occurred at about 5.30pm. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the group were caught unawares as the men approached them.

“One of the men pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the picnickers. He demanded their valuables and jewellery. His accomplices riffled through their pockets and bags while the armed suspect kept his weapon leveled at the group,” Deokaran said.

The men fled on foot in the direction of the Promenade. No arrests have yet been made.

This is the first armed robbery on Glenashley Beach that the Northglen News has reported on since 2013, when a kite surfer was robbed by three men as he was packing up his kit.  His possessions – including his kite, towel, swimming shorts, surfing kit and a knife – were stolen.
