Female jogger robbed at gunpoint

This is the third armed mugging in the area this year.

A PRESTONDALE resident was robbed at gunpoint while running on Thursday evening. The incident occurred at about 6.15pm on Preston Drive. According to Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, the woman had her headphones on and didn’t realise that there was a man running behind her until he grabbed her shoulder.

“He ran up behind her and pointed a firearm at her. He then demanded her valuables. The armed suspect took her iPod, her watch and a ring, and even asked her to remove her takkies. He then fled on foot in the direction of the sugar cane fields,” Deokaran said.

This is the third armed mugging since the beginning of this year, following the robbery and assault of a couple on Broadway and a cyclist on Riverside Road.

“The cyclist was robbed of his cellphone and the thief ran into the bushes along Riverside Road. These muggers are preying on vulnerable people. I urge residents to walk or run in bigger groups wherever possible, and to stick to well-lit and well populated areas. Muggers are far less likely to target people when there are others around or when they are likely to be seen,” he explained.
