VIDEO: Ward 35 and 36 voters make their mark at the polls

Queues formed early as Durban North residents turned out to cast their ballots, voting for change and improved service delivery.

WHEN voting stations opened at 08:00 on Wednesday morning (November 4), queues were already forming across Wards 35 and 36 of eThekwini, with voters turning out early to cast their ballots in what is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested Local Government Elections yet.

From the young to the elderly, Durban North residents were among those who made sure their voices were heard at the polls, which were a hive of activity with political parties assisting voters at the gate with making sure that they are at the correct voting stations.

With the queue moving quickly at Durban North College voting station, Elaine and Eddie Landsberg brought their daughter, Bailey, along to witness them cast their ballots.

“We are not just voting for ourselves, we are voting for the community as well as service delivery.” said Eddie, who praised the organised and smooth process.

“It was a positive experience. The organisers have done well to speed up the process, and it’s reassuring to see older voters being well cared for.”

Eddie’s positive experience was echoed by second-time voter Anelisa Fikeni, who encouraged young voters to come out in their numbers to vote for change.

“It is up to us as the younger generation to effect the change that we want to see, if you do not vote you cannot complain,” she said.

Fikeni voted at the NG Kerk Station in uMhlanga, where queues were long but moved quickly.

“I came to vote for a lot of things but most importantly change. As the younger generation, we need jobs and service delivery in our community. If we do not vote we cannot complain about what is happening in our country,” said Fikeni.

By midday, voters were still streaming into voting stations across eThekwini. Voting stations were scheduled to remain open until 21:00.
