Voting off to a smooth start across North Durban wards

There have been no major incidents reported across Wards 34, 35, 36 and 110 on Wednesday morning as residents exercise their right to vote.

BAR a few hiccups, this year’s Local Government Elections got off to a smooth start in Wards 34, 35, 36 and 110 on Wednesday as queues of residents stood in line to cast their vote.

A total of 29.2 million voters are registered to participate in the elections, which will be conducted at 23 696 voting stations across the country.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has deployed approximately 188 000 electoral officials to administer the voting process across the nine provinces.

Voting stations opened at 07:00 and close at 21:00, with Wednesday (November 4) declared a public holiday to enable eligible voters to participate in the elections.

Speaking to Northglen News, Ward 36 councillor Heinz de Boer said he was encouraged with the turnout thus far.

“The voting processes are largely running smoothly. We really encourage everyone to go out and vote. This is such a critically important election and every single vote matters. Take this opportunity to participate in democracy,” he said.

In Ward 110, there were some complaints with some residents living in the same household having to vote at two different voting stations.

Across voting stations IEC officials were also making concessions for pensioners and the disabled so as to not have them waiting in queues.
