Armed robbers open fire on security officers
Two of the suspects involved in the robbery were wounded in the shootout.
A SHOOTOUT and high speed chase in the early hours of this morning in Springfield Park has left two suspects wounded. According to Marshall Security’s Tyron Powell, the armed gang were robbing a business premises on Teakfield Road, when one of the men, posted as a lookout, opened fire on security personnel.
The gang who arrived in a white SUV had gained entrance to the complex by cutting the chain on the rear gate with a bolt cutter.
“Our security guard on site called for back-up. The suspects managed to force open a side door to a warehouse and took two computer towers and two monitors from the premises. They also went into the server room but a pepper spray system prevented them from taking anything else.
“Our first response vehicle to respond saw a suspect standing watch at the outer gate with a rifle. As the suspects came towards the intersection, they noticed our vehicles and opened fire. Our response officers returned fire into the suspects vehicle,” Powell said.
The suspects fled via Inanda road towards KwaMashu, but managed to lose pursuing chasers.
“Some of our vehicles were hit in the shootout but thankfully none of our members where injured. Reports later said two men attempted to receive medical treatment at the KwaMashu clinic for gun shot wounds this morning which is being investigated,” he said.
