Bernelee hits the right notes

uMhlanga songbird flies the flag for South Africa at recent world champs.

PUTTING KZN on the map was one of the things uMhlanga resident, Bernelee Frick, sought to showcase at this year’s World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood. This was the second time the Crawford College La Lucia pupil represented South Africa at the world champs, and she didn’t disappoint.

The 15-year-old won three silver and two bronze medals and an Industry Award. Bernelee was one of 16 South Africans presented with an Industry Award, which is an acknowledgement from industry professionals that the contestants have the talent to excel in the performing arts industry.

“I was really happy with my performances, considering I was in the biggest talent age pool this year. It was incredibly tough, but competitions like this help show you where you are from a talent perspective. It was great hearing honest feedback from the judges. One of the judges told me I will do very well in Broadway and theatre and was therefore invited to a personal interview with director, Joey Zangardi from The New York Film Academy.

“During my performances I felt nervous but kept focused on my end goal – to be the best I could be. This year’s world champs showed me that there are certain things I need to improve on if I want to win the gold. I’d love to be part of the show again next year if I get an opportunity,” the Grade 9 pupil said.

Bernelee competed in eight categories at the competition and insists that her mom was her backbone.

“I think my mom was more nervous than me but she was super excited for me. It was awesome, coming off the stage and seeing her smiling proudly. I think the team’s performances were best summed up by the phrase, ‘Simunye’ (‘We are one’), which showed the solidarity of the SA team in the USA,” she said.
