N2 clear after flaming protests

Hundreds of residents from Durban’s Kennedy Road Informal Settlement are said to have barred Umgeni Road with burning tyres and wood.

PROTESTING along the N2 highway near the new Umgeni interchange has subsided. This is according to police spokesman, Maj Thulani Zwane.

Hundreds of residents from Durban’s Kennedy Road Informal Settlement are said to have barred Umgeni Road with burning tyres and wood. The north and south-bound traffic was forced to a standstill as the flaming barricades ran right across the road in the vicinity of the new bridge.

Authorities were dispatched to the scene and were able to successfully disperse the crowds. Zwane said he believed that the morning’s riots were motivated by poor service delivery. However, he could not confirm the allegation.

Media also reported that Burlington Heights Informal Settlement residents protested, prevented traffic from entering or leaving the  Shallcross area, while other protesters closed one of the lanes along the N2 highway, Cato Manor this morning.
