WARD councillor, Heinz de Boer, has welcomed the construction of a concrete fence along Malacca Road and Ryde Place. The latter, in recent years, had become an illegal dumping ground with anything from broken furniture to clothes, toys and construction rubble being dumped.

It is hoped that the fence, which is valued at more than R1.3-million, will keep dumpers and criminals at bay. The concrete palisade fence is 1.5 metres high and will be topped with barbed wire.

“I’m very excited about the fence. While dumping has been an ongoing problem on Ryde Place and Malacca Road, there has also been easy access to the Red Hill Cemetery, with criminals using it as a thoroughfare. We’ve heard reports of people stealing coffins and criminals parking near the cemetery and entering Glen Hills on foot.

“There were also a number of people using the open access to fornicate and take drugs in the cemetery. Praise must go to the head of the Parks Department, Thembinkosi Ngcobo, who undertook to complete the project,” he said.
