uMhlanga shootout suspects charged with attempted murder

Police believe the men involved in the high speed chase and shootout were hijackers looking for a 'soft target'.

DURBAN North police have confirmed that two of the suspects involved in this afternoon’s shootout in uMhlanga will be charged with attempted murder. What is more, police found a number of car breaking implements and suspect the men were hijackers looking for a ‘soft target’ in the uMhlanga area. The criminals mistook a road under construction for a shortcut and crashed their vehicle after a high speed chase ended on Kikembe Drive. One of the suspects (35), who was shot several times, was pronounced dead on scene.

A local resident, who was driving along Umhlanga Rocks Drive was lucky to escape unharmed after she was caught up in the shooting.

“One of the bullets struck her vehicle but she was not injured. She was extremely shaken by the incident. We are still looking for a fourth suspect as well as the weapons used in the shootout. The armed gang threw their pistols out the window near the end of the chase,” confirmed Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS.

A fourth suspect, who escaped, is still on the loose and the two suspects who were arrested will appear in the Durban Magistrates’ Court soon.

KZN provincial commissioner, Lt General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, said the latest shootout was a warning to criminals.

“The swift reaction of the vigilant members and the arrest of the suspects is commended. I want to warn the criminals that police will leave no stone unturned in the fight against crime in the province and we will ensure that criminals are brought to book and convicted.”, she said.
