A man was arrested in Durban North yesterday on suspicion of trespassing after he was allegedly found loitering in the Thirlmere Place area.

According to Marshall Security, its control room received information via a Crime Alert WhatsApp group at about 08:05 about a suspicious person in the area.

Armed response officers were dispatched to investigate and allegedly spotted the suspect inside a property in Thirlmere Place.

“When officers approached, the man allegedly fled on foot, jumping over several boundary walls and entering neighbouring properties in an attempt to evade arrest. Additional officers were called in to assist, and the suspect was apprehended after a brief foot pursuit through several properties,” said Marshall Security spokesperson Tyron Powell.

Marshall Security said officers recovered a pair of pliers, believed to have been intended for use as a house break-in implement, as well as a Smart ID card and several bank cards.

Using the details on the identification, the security company’s control room was able to trace the owner of the items.

The owner, who lives in Johannesburg, confirmed that the identification and bank cards belonged to him. He told Marshall Security that he had travelled to Durban for the long weekend and had lost the items during his visit.

The suspect was taken to Durban North SAPS for further investigation and processing.

The recovered identification and bank cards were handed over to police to be returned to their rightful owner.
