uMhlanga bookmakers held up by armed men

The armed suspects ordered staff to lie face down on the ground while they emptied out the safe.

THREE men armed with handguns robbed a bookmaker on Aurora Drive of an undisclosed amount of money on Monday. The daring daylight robbery took place at about 10am at Gateway Tattersalls cofirmed Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS.

“The assistant manager was startled when a man approached her asking to use the toilet. She asked how he had got in to the shop as they were closed. He then pointed a firearm at her and told her to take him to the safe and open it. Another armed suspect, who had also gained access to the store, ordered the staff to lie face down on the floor.

“The suspect then emptied out the safe and ordered the assistant manager to lie face down on the floor. According to the staff, the men weren’t wearing balaclavas or anything to obscure their identities. They escaped on foot and we believe a third man was waiting for the duo in a getaway vehicle parked outside the bookmakers shop,” he said.
