Bus stoned on Broadway by taxi driver, accomplices

Metro Police impounded the taxi which was found with a number of bricks and stones.

POLICE are looking for a taxi driver and his accomplices after a stoning incident on Broadway (Swapo) Road on Wednesday afternoon. Metro Police impounded the taxi but the driver and his accomplices were nowhere to be seen when the Durban North SAPS arrived.

The incident comes hours before the taxi strike which was called off by the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco). The strike began in protest against the Department of Transport Road Traffic Inspectorate and Shanela Environmental Management impounding taxis for not having permits.

“We found a number of bricks and stones in the taxi but when we arrived there the taxi driver and his accomplices had run off. One man was struck by a brick and suffered injuries to his head. However he was so intoxicated he could not determine whether he wanted to open a case of assault or not. We have opened a case of public disturbance and are looking for the people responsible,” said Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS.
