Protesters vow to continue action at 5pm today

While the protesters have dispersed, several roads in the north of Durban are still closed.

PROTESTERS throughout the Greenwood Park policing district have reportedly dispersed after a morning of turmoil. However, station representative, W/O Leon Audh, said the crowds have vowed to return at 5pm today.

Audh confirmed that one person had been arrested during this morning’s violence.

Since early this morning the protesters have been disrupting traffic by blocking roads with burning tyres and rocks. The situation later escalated when protesters began stoning and torching cars on North Coast Road.

One man was shot while another was brutally stoned during the course of the protest action this morning, authorities confirmed.

“In some cases protesters were dispersed by public order police with rubber bullets and teargas,” he said.

Roads that remain closed as we head up to peak hour include,  Electron Road, North Coast Road, Sea Cow Lake, Riverside Road and Queen Nandi Drive.  The intersections of Newlands East and Nandi Drive is closed.

What’s more, traffic lights are also out at the corner of North Coast Road and Sea Cow Lake Road after vandals stole the cables.
