Hawks nab would-be jewellery thieves

The suspects were in possession of 9mm unlicensed firearms as well as ammunition when they were arrested.

The elite crime fighting unit, the Hawks thwarted an alleged business robbery in the Greenwood Park policing precinct on Saturday. Acting on a tip-off, authorities arrested four armed men and confiscated several unlicensed 9mm firearms.

According to W/O Leon Audh of Greenwood Park SAPS, the unit received information of an armed gang in a grey Hyundai that were set to rob a jewellery store at a local centre.

Men matching the description of the report were soon spotted in the Phoenix area.

“The members held observation on the route that the alleged armed men were travelling on and noticed the vehicle passing them. When the vehicle stopped at a service station on North Coast Road the members tactically approached the vehicle and searched it and the occupants,” said Audh.

“The members from Hawks recovered unlicensed 9mm firearms with ammunition,” he added.

Audh, confirmed that the suspects were detained at the Greenwood Park station following the arrest.
