1 killed, 3 injured in La Lucia Ridge accident

Rescue personnel had to use the Jaws of Life to free two occupants from one of the vehicles.

ONE person has been killed while three others were injured in a collision on the M41 near uMhlanga Ridge on Saturday night. According to Marshall Security’s Kyle van Reenen, a BMW collided with the rear of a Toyota Conquest causing it to crash into the armco barrier.

“The driver of the Conquest went into cardiac arrest after the impact. A member of the public attempted to resuscitate him by performing CPR on him, but he was unsuccessful. However, the driver succumbed to his injuries. There were five occupants in the Conquest and two of them who were sitting in the back seat were entrapped in the accident.

“The Jaws of Life were used to free them. The passenger and the driver of the BMW escaped serious injury. The police are also on scene and an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway,” he said.

According to Netcare 911 spokesman, Chris Botha, the driver, a man in his forties tragically died at the scene due to the extensive injuries that he sustained.

“One person was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries while two seriously injured people were entrapped in the overturned vehicle. Medics stabilised the injured and after the patients were extricated from the vehicle  medics transported them to various hospitals for the care that they required,” he said.

The fatal accident came a mere half hour after a driver was burnt alive in a crash on the M4 on Saturday night.
