THE N2/M41 uMhlanga interchange, which has been under construction for the last three years, is expected to be completed by April 2017. That’s according to Corne’ Roux, project manager at South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) Eastern region. Roux said the project which is jointly done with the KZN Department of Transport, will see the N2/M41 Mt Edgecombe interchange be transformed into to a four-level systems interchange that will provide free-flow movements in all directions.

He added the upgrade was required due to the existing interchange operating at capacity with severe delays experienced by motorists utilising the M41 and the N2.

“Construction commenced in May 2013, with the expected completion set for April 2017. The completed interchange facility will provide free-flow directional ramps with at least two lanes on each of the major movements. Progress is being made with the construction of parapets on the launched bridges and the construction of a pedestrian bridge is nearing completion with associated pedestrian paths, stairs and taxi lay-byes still to be constructed.

“Dismantling of temporary bridge launch structures and temporary piers have started. These structures are generally rectangular shaped and should not be confused with the permanent structures. The widening of the M41 and the construction of a median barrier is also well advanced,” he said.

Roux added as the project near completion, the deviation of traffic onto completed sections will provide access for construction work and for the dismantling of temporary deviations will be introduced in phases in the last few months of the contract.
