Lagoon Drive speed humps welcomed

Seven speed humps have been installed on Lagoon Drive.

THE installation of seven speed humps along Lagoon Drive have been welcomed by the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) and local ward councillor, Heinz de Boer. Residents and various stakeholders have been calling for speed calming measures on the busy road since 2009.

According to DeWet Geldenhuys of the UIP, the speed humps have already reduced vehicle speed and improved pedestrian safety.

“We are really pleased with the City’s decision as this something we’ve been lobbying for a while. The last speed hump is just before the Breakers Resort. In the last few years we’ve seen some serious accidents on the road and speed was a contributing factor. Residents who live on Lagoon Drive have also welcomed the installation. We’ve had a lot of positive feedback to say well done. A contributing factor to the humps was there were several cars and taxis using Lagoon Drive as a thoroughfare to get on the M4,” he said.

uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, said the decision was part of a bigger project to pedestrianise uMhlanga.

“The City will be putting in the table top speed humps, like the ones in Chartwell Drive in the village, to help pedestrianise the area. Speed humps are one of the top five requests in my ward so it’s fantastic to see the calming measures which have been a long time coming,” he said.
