250 charged in M4 roadblock

One person was also charged for drunk driving in the operation.

METRO Police have confirmed that 250 drivers were charged for various offences in Wednesday’s roadblock on the M4. Motorists were fined for driving without a licence, driving with an expired licence and driving unroadworthy vehicles. The operation was held by the Metro Police and the Durban North SAPS and saw more than 300 vehicles pulled over.

Wiseman Mchunu, spokesman for the Durban Metro Police, said one person was also arrested for drunk driving, while another required medical assistance at the operation.

“There will be more roadblocks leading up to the festive season. We have stepped up our visibility on the roads and we want to remind motorists to obey the rules of the road always. We will not tolerate motorists who endanger the lives of other road users,” he said.

Metro Police also cordoned off the off-ramp to Broadway in an effort to try and stop motorists from escaping the roadblock. The northbound and southbound lanes were both targeted in the operation.
