Hijacker arrested after getaway attempt ends in crash

The hijacker was found with two unlicensed firearms and ammunition after a high speed chase ended on Queen Nandi Drive.

A HIJACKER was arrested when a high-speed chase ended in a car crash on Queen Nandi Drive on Sunday night. The car, a Hyundai I20 had been hijacked from a Greenwood Park resident on Belmont Road just minutes earlier.

According to provincial police spokesman, Lt Col Thulani Zwane, the hijacker was found with two unlicensed firearms. “The victim was hijacked at gunpoint by three suspects who fled with his vehicle. Within a few minutes, members of the Durban K9 Unit spotted the hijacked vehicle and a high speed chase ensued.

“While chasing the vehicle it collided with another vehicle on the R102. Two suspects managed to flee the scene and a third, a 33-year-old man was arrested. Two unlicensed firearms with ammunition were found in his possession,” he said.

The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court later this week on charges of car jacking, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
