City warns against tipping people who direct traffic

The municipality said such people are known to purposefully vandalise the lights in order to get money from motorists.

THE eThewkini Municiplaity have warned motorists to not give money to people who direct cars at busy intersections when the traffic lights are faulty.

“Repairs to faulty traffic lights is costing our city millions of Rands each year as a result of vandalism. The majority of traffic light faults are caused by vandalism, particularly by those wishing to gain money by manually directing traffic and collecting tips from motorists,” the City said in a post on their Facebook page.

The municipality said they believed some people deliberately tamper with traffic signal cables

“Many traffic signal LEDs are also being stolen resulting in the signal being defective. In order to minimise further breaking of traffic lights, motorists are urged to refrain from paying people who pose as pointsmen at traffic intersections,” it added.

The post also noted that another danger to motorists from the encouragement the people who are tipped gain, is that in the event of a legal case resulting because of a crash, the hand directions given won’t be valid in a court of law.

The City encouraged the public to report faulty traffic lights to 080 1313 013.
