DURBAN North SAPS, Metro Police and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) arrested 16 people for drunk driving on Friday night. The roadblock took place on the M41 going towards uMhlanga.

Since the beginning of this year more than 100 drivers have been arrested for drunk driving in roadblocks on the M4 and the M41.

Durban North SAPS spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, reiterated the station’s stance on drunk driving.

“We will continue to host roadblocks to try to ensure safety on our roads. Too many motorists are still risking their own safety as well as that of other road users by driving their vehicles after they have consumed alcohol. It is truly concerning how common drunk driving is,” Deokaran said.

According to South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) more than 60 per cent of the 18 000 deaths a year on the roads in the country are associated with drunk drivers and/or pedestrians.
