Jacob Zuma to be prosecuted: NPA

Former president, Jacob Zuma must face the music after the NPA confirmed he will go on trial for fraud, racketeering and money laundering.

THE National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) boss, Shaun Abrahams has confirmed former South African president, Jacob Zuma will go on trail for corruption. The announcement comes a little over a month since Zuma’s fall from power after he was forced to step down as president to be replaced by new ruling party leader, Cyril Ramaphosa.

Zuma also faces charges of racketeering, fraud and money laundering.

The charges relate to a R30-billion government arms deal in the late 1990s. The charges were initially filed but then dropped by the authority before Zuma ran for president in 2009.

“A trial court must decide and ventilate on this matter,” Abrahams said.

In a statement, the Afican National Congress (ANC) said it had noted the decision of the NPA. The party said it reaffirms its confidence in the country’s criminal justice system.

“We equally affirm our commitment to the constitutionally enshrined principle of equality of all before the law. Accordingly we call on all South Africans at large to afford the NPA space to conduct its work unhindered. We continue to assert the inalienable right of all in our country, including Jacob Zuma, to be presumed innocent until and if proven guilty,” the party said.
