Man charged over false M4 robbery case

The man alleged he was robbed and assaulted while on his way to pay workers at a construction site near Sibaya.

A 38-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested and charged with defeating the course of justice after lying about a robbery on the M4 near Sibaya earlier this month.

According to SAPS provincial spokesperson, Thembeka Mbhele, the suspect alleged he had parked his vehicle near the M4 highway to pay workers at a local construction site.

He then alleged while walking towards them he was held up by two armed men who pointed firearms at him, assaulted him and robbed him of a bag he was carrying as well as his cell phone.

“They allegedly fled with the bag containing cash in their getaway vehicle towards Durban. A case of armed robbery was opened at Durban North police station for investigation. During the course of the investigation the detective assigned to the case established that the suspect’s story did not correspond with evidence available and that he had opened a false case. He was charged for defeating the course of justice and he will appear in the Durban Magistrates Court soon,” she said.

This is the second incident of defeating the ends of justice after three men lied about a hijacking which ended in a crash in eMdloti earlier this year.
