Thieves steal gate from Somerset Park home

A case of theft has been opened at the station, confirmed Capt Raymond Deokaran.

POLICE are investigating a case of theft after a Somerset Park homeowner’s gate was stolen last week by alleged scrap metal thieves. The chrome gate with the home’s number embossed on it was taken while the homeowners were asleep.

Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for Durban North SAPS confirmed a case had been opened at the station.

“The homeowner said the gate had been stolen while they were asleep. At this point we believe the theft may have been committed by scrap metal thieves. In 2013 we had a string of brass house numbers stolen from homes. Unfortunately there’s money in it, whether it’s copper, metal or brass.

“There’s no way these guys are carrying the stuff in the back of trolleys, that may be the case in some instances, but we’ve also had cases of thieves stealing geysers. Some of them are coming into the area and using a truck or a bakkie to transport the bigger items. We work closely with scrap dealers in our area and our feeling is the items are being taken out the area and sold,” he said.,” he said.

A case of theft has been opened at the station, confirmed Deokaran.
