Residents show support for victim of brutal attack

Riverside Trail and the Mountain Backpackers Group alongside Ward Events said the event was a resounding success.

HUNDREDS of residents showed their support for triathlete Mhlengi Gwala at the recent Sun Sibaya King Shaka Trail Run. The event featured a 10km and 5km route, which started and finished at the casino.

Riverside Trail and the Mountain Backpackers Group alongside Ward Events said the event was a resounding success.

The theme of the event was based on the days when King Shaka sent his warriors out to battle and created many trails in the area.

According to the route planner, Buzz Bolton, the event was aimed at raising funds for Gwala, who was brutally attacked earlier this year. He was attacked by a gang of men attacked him and attempted to cut off his legs with a chainsaw.

“It was great to see so many people support the event following the horrific chain saw attack on Mhlengi (Gwala). The trails were short but testing. One of the standouts for participants was the Umazimzim dancers who were out on the route to cheer runners along to the beat of a drum. Mhlengi bravely put his injured leg to the test and ran his first five kilometre since the accident,” he said.
