NO South Africans have been reported missing in Jakarta following Friday’s multiple powerful quakes, which triggered a tsunami in Sulawesi province, the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) said on Saturday.

The reported strong quakes of 6.0, 7.4 and 6.1 magnitudes claimed over 800 lives.

While no South Africans have been reported missing, DIRCO, which has been in contact with the South African Embassy in Jakarta, advised those in need to contact the department.

“The Department of International Relations and Cooperation urges family members of any South African, who is residing or on holiday in Indonesia, whom they cannot contact or locate, to contact the department’s 24-hour switchboard number at 012 351 1000,” the department said.

DIRCO extended condolences to the government and people of Indonesia on behalf of South Africa.

“The thoughts of the people of South Africa are with the people of Indonesia during this difficult period and the South African government extends its sympathy to those families who have lost their loved ones.”
