Funding approval holds up Firwood Road pool repair

THE eThekwini Municipality said it cannot give an estimated date or timeframe for the reopening of Firwood Road Swimming Pool due to the scope of its repair works. The pool was closed last year in July in order for the City to fix a leakage problem which had affected residents on Falkirk Avenue, directly behind the pool.
However since then, there has been little or no movement leaving residents fed-up and frustrated.
City spokesperson, Mandla Nsele, said funding would have to be approved for the repair and upgrade of the pool before a timeframe could be given. He said the estimated cost is in the region of R8.5-million to repair and upgrade the municipal pool.

“The scope of works has been identified by architectural department of which the estimated cost is approximately R8.5 million. The resultant outcome and date of completion will only be determined after funding is approved via the adjustment budget process and supply chain management process. Only then will the date of completion will be determined by the scope of the work,” Nsele said.
He said the repair work to the pool includes filtration circulation polypropylene/HDPE piping, paving of the external surface areas, waterproofing of launder. He added the pool will also undergo a cosmetic upgrade which includes a grandstand shelter and paddling pool.
The pool’s expansion joints within pool carcass and launder channels will also need to be replaced confirmed the City.

The City has currently 52 swimming pools, of which 46 are operational.
