Residents urged to take part in Bridgevale Valley clean-up

Local councillor Ryley said the City's Parks Department will be involved in the clean-up taking place tomorrow. Meet outside the depot at 8am on 11 The Drive, Durban North to be a part of the solution.

A DURBAN North resident is calling on other residents to take matters into their own hands. Since 2015 the residents have been asking officials to maintain the Bridgevale Valley.

Working with local councillor Shaun Ryley and other residents, Carri Lambert has organised a community clean up to cut down overgrown vegetation and pick up litter in the open space on Prospect Hall Road.

“We are appealing to people living along Old Mill Way and adjacent to the Valley to come and help us clean the area. The overgrown bushes are a security threat to all of us. People used to use the space to walk their dogs or jog but now it’s used as a hide out spot for criminals,” said Carri Lambert.

Local councillor Ryley said he has managed to get the City’s Parks Department involved as they have promised to take part in the clean up.

“This will not be the first time we’re attempting to maintain the space. There is definitely progress and we can see a difference.  The City’s DSW department has agreed to send trucks to collect the dirt. This is also to avoid residents picking up the litter and still leaving it there,” he said.

Ryley said the aim is not just to clean the space but to make something useful of it. He said even though nothing is confirmed, they are hoping the Valley can be turned into a Durban North indigenous garden with cycling and running tracks.

The clean-up will be held on Saturday, 20 October. Residents are to meet outside the depot on at 8am 11, The Drive, Durban North. All cleaning materials such as gloves, refuse bags and rakes will be provided on site.
