Keeping the area clean is no walk in the park

The clean up team sorted the litter before taking it to the dump, filling 20 recycle bags, five glass bags and 15 black bags.

A SUNNINGDALE resident joined a world wide clean up when he took to his local park to tackle the litter that he often noticed when driving past.

Juan de Lange said he had long noticed the scattered litter that covered the Glen Anil Park and his inspiration to clean the area had come from the Freelancer Clean Up The World Challenge, a global movement started in Australia. De Lange and his wife and domestic staff tackled the park on Friday, 29 March.

“There was a lot of litter scattered everywhere, especially along the side, in between all the bushes. And when we got to the tree at the top, that where we saw a lot of mess. There were cut wires, plugs and random stuff,” said de Lange.

“It looked like rubbish had been burnt at the site. Can you imagine if children had to go there and play, or if people wanted to walk their dogs. I don’t go there, I prefer another park, but I think the park would be awesome if it was maintained,” he added.

The team even sorted the litter into recyclable items and waste.

“We sorted the rubbish and filled 20 recycle bags, five glass bags and 15 black bags. There was also a pile of large waste that had to be transported by bakkie to the dump. We didn’t just leave it there, we took it down to the Rinaldo dump,” he said.

De Lange added that he felt rewarded after the clean up and had a great response to the video he uploaded to social media as a part of the challenge.

“Our video has gotten over 3500 views in just one and a half days. We are doing this as a challenge, to get it out there, not only locally, but as part of a world wide clean up. This has lit a fie in us and we really want to make the most of it, give back to the community and help people. Our world is going down, with pollution and if we don’t stand together as humans, we’re gone,” he said.
