No backing down for Durban mayor’s supporters

The protesters are calling for the reinstatement of Gumede following the ANC's decision to extend her leave.

BY 2pm today supporters of embattled Durban mayor, Zandile Gumede were still protesting outside the  KZN ANC headquarters in Durban on Thursday.

The protesters are calling for the reinstatement of Gumede following the ANC’s decision to extend her leave.

Earlier in the day the protest turned violent outside the City Hall. Two journalists were manhandled by police and a video detailing the assault has gone viral.

Seven people were arrested after police used stun grenades outside the Durban city hall to disperse the crowd.

Gumede has been charged with corruption involving a multi-million Rand Durban Solid Waste tender. She was set to return to her duties yesterday.

However, the ANC’s provincial secretary general said yesterday the investigation was almost complete and a decision would be made when the committee meets in the first week of August to take a final decision on the matter.
