Government announces new R25 dinosaur coin

A R25 fine-silver coin featuring a dinosaur will be released next year as part of the 2020 Natura series collectable coins. Designs for the coin reveal a theropod dinosaur known as a Coelophysidae. The dinosaur is characterised by its long slender skull.

The final design was published in the Government Gazette 2019 and finance minister, Tito Mboweni declared the one ounce coin will be legal tender, worth R25, from 1 January 2020. Mboweni also released the specifications of the coin which will be 38.725 mm in diameter and weigh 31.107g.
