Man shot on his way to Verulam Court

The victim is a well-known activist who was expected to defend himself in a case scheduled at the Verulam Family Court.

A DURBAN North man (66) is fighting for his life after he was shot in the head while walking into Verulam Family Court on Wednesday at about 8.30am.

Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa, said the victim, Yousuf Ahmed Deedat, is in a critical condition after the shooting.

“On arrival, the victim was found lying face down on the pavement. He sustained a single gunshot wound to his head,” he said.

According to Balram, Deedat is a well-known activist who was expected to defend himself in a case scheduled at the Verulam Family Court.

Balram added that Deedat was shot in the presence of his wife, who was walking alongside him.

“According to witnesses, Deedat was walking towards the court when he was approached by a man who drew a firearm and shot him once before fleeing the vicinity on foot,” he said.

The suspect is at large despite efforts to pursue him.

“A security officer who witnessed the incident pursued the suspect who got into an awaiting white Mazda car on Groom Street and sped off,” said Balram.

The victim was stabilised on scene by paramedics.
