Women’s Month: Getting to know Selena Naidoo from Imperium Coaching

The company was created with the aim of spreading positivity, awareness and knowledge that promotes holistic health and well-being.

1. Tell us about your business?
Imperium Coaching (PTY) LTD is a new-fangled necessity for the 21st century. The company was created with the aim of spreading positivity, awareness and knowledge that promotes holistic health and well-being. I am a ‘Transformational Holistic Life Coach’ and a huge proponent for education and skills implementation, especially regarding holistic development, health and wellbeing. Human beings are multifaceted. Our lives comprise of different aspects – physical, social, mental, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, etc. As such, we need to engage and enhance every aspect of our being in order to live and lead a truly healthy lifestyle. I strongly believe that teaching people the necessary skills and methods and equipping them with the tools that they need to positively develop and transform themselves, in every aspect, will have innumerable benefits on their holistic health and wellbeing. The overall objectives of the company are to serve the community and eventually the world, to create a more positive mindset thereby promoting holistically healthier lifestyles, to promote mental and emotional health skills and education, to reduce social barriers and promote community development, to uplift, motivate, and inspire clientele and most importantly to influence positive change. As the founder and director of Imperium Coaching these objectives are essentially my own as this is what I wholeheartedly believe in and I am so passionate about making a positive change in people’s lives.

2. Are there any accomplishments you are particularly proud of?
I am proud of everything about myself. As a young Indian female who grew up in a single income household, I’ve accomplished a lot but the best is yet to come. I am an honoured UKZN alumna, having completed a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree in 2018. I’ve had the privilege and pleasure of interacting with and influencing people, as young as 2 and as old as 86, from all over the world during my time as an ESL teacher. I am very deeply rooted in my heritage and culture and as such I find immense joy in serving as a member of religious organisations and NPOs. More than anything, I am a lifelong learner. I pride myself in continuing my education and personal development. I am passionate – some might say obsessed – about learning and implementing the methods, skills and tools, used by the most successful people in the world, in my own life, so that I can pass this knowledge onto all those that I cross paths with. I have internationally accredited certifications in child psychology, neuroplasticity, meditation, cognitive behavioural therapy and a host of other alternative holistic therapies and practices. Through Imperium Coaching, I am initiating and influencing positive change and I cannot express the amount of fulfilment I find in doing this work.

3. How do you achieve work-life balance?
My life is my work and my work is my life. I am a natural born helper. There is not a day that goes by where I do not help people, whether it is through my business, in my voluntary work or in a personal capacity. I feel very fortunate to be in the holistic and personal development industry, and I stand resolute in knowing that this what I was meant to do. The effort may be all mine, but the glory is definitely all God’s. When I find myself feeling overwhelmed, I practice what I preach and what I teach – I am that certain about the effects and results of what I do.

4. What one thing have you learned as a small business owner that has served you well over the years?
I am still fairly young in the business world. I was only 22 when I started this company in 2018. I’ve learnt a lot in these two years but the lessons that will stick with me most are of self-belief and perseverance. Coaching is a relatively new concept to many South Africans, especially where I come from in Phoenix, Durban. I was not met with the same enthusiasm and eagerness for self-growth and holistic development that I had had and I had put out. It did discourage me more than I cared to show, but then I remembered how much I believe in what I do and how much I believe in myself. And so I learnt to persevere even through adversity and to never doubt myself or my work.

5. How would you describe yourself in one word?
I am a game-changer!

6. What is your favourite quote?
“It is my dream and my ambition to one day create a world where emotional and mental health is prioritized and not stigmatized… I will change the world – one mindset at a time.” – Selena Naidoo
Yes, I am quoting myself. And I truly do stand by that.

7. What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning?
I see kids whose emotional and mental states are ignored, parents who can’t cope with the stresses of life and I see people who are struggling to overcome life’s challenges, no matter the magnitude. It breaks my heart to know that there’s so much that the world and universe has to offer and that so many people will never get to experience it, purely due to their mindset and beliefs. I want holistic health and wellbeing for the world and the urgency of the need for change is what motivates me to get out of bed every morning.

8. Where do you see yourself and your company in 10 years?
I’ve started at home, here, in Durban, because I want to transform the lives of the people whom I consider as my own. I will take Imperium Coaching (PTY) LTD national and I definitely see myself and this company initiating and influencing positive, holistic transformation globally. I want to touch and change the lives of people in every corner of the globe, from the township of Phoenix and the slums of India and Brazil to the cities of Sandton, Hong Kong, London and New York. I see myself starting social revolutions that are imperative to human evolution.

9. What advice would you give to young women who want to succeed in the workplace?
From one young woman to another: Stand firm in yourself! Believe completely, wholeheartedly, and unwaveringly in who you are and what you have to offer the world. Let nothing and no one change how you see, feel, or think about yourself. Be unapologetically you – be kind, be bold, be courageous, be fearless! The sky is not the limit, we know that man’s been to the moon. When you stand firm in the infinite power that is you, you WILL achieve everything!

10. Are you running any promotions for Women’s Day and during the month of August?
With August being Women’s Month, Imperium Coaching is offering all women a free 10-minute consult and 10% off of their first private session that is booked for the month. Due to the current global pandemic, all sessions are currently being held online.
