The North Durban Lions need your help

While they used to distribute 150 hampers per month before the lockdown, they club is currently limited to just 50 hampers.

THE North Durban Lions club is appealing to the community to support their food hamper drive which caters to elderly residents who live at a home for the elderly.

While they used to distribute 150 hampers per month before the lockdown, they club is currently limited to just 50 hampers.

The hamper includes tinned beans, fish, vegetables and corn as well as rice, tea, jam and sugar. Avril Hobbs of the North Durban lions said funding impacted the hamper drive.

“Post lockdown and during lockdown we did not have money and so now we do about 50 hampers per month. Tafta comes to collect the hampers. Before lookdown we would pack at least double the amount of hampers,” she said.

Hobbs said they started this project in the 1970’s.

“We used to feed pensioners in KwaMashu. From there it developed. We did it through Durban City Health and then we started feeding state pensioners at Tafta.

We collect the items we would normally look for when shopping for groceries,” she said. The food hampers are currently continuing through a sponsorship of R3000 that The North Durban Lions club receives each month, added Hobbs.

Grant Hobbs of the club said they are in urgent need of donations of non-perishable food items to support the project.

“We have now started our collection again but due to the Covid-19 pandemic we don’t receive as much as we used to and have had to resort to purchasing items, in which we are restricted to R3000. We are looking for assistance from the Durban north community as well,” he added.

Non perishable food items or financial contributions can be donated to the club.
