Mother and child die in fire at Effingham informal settlement
It is still unclear how the fire started.
A MOTHER and her child died due to smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at Sim Place Informal Settlement around midnight, last night.
About 50 families have been displaced due to the furnace that burnt down approximately 40 shacks.
The cause of the blaze is yet to be established.

Effingham CPF spokesperson, Rajiv Jaynath, said the affected families are currently trying to rebuild their homes and are in need of blankets and clothing.
“What has happened to this community is devastating. They need all the help they can get,” said Bobby Maharajh, ward 43 councillor.
He also sent out a plea for other residents to be careful when lighting fires to keep warm this winter.
“Going into winter, more people are going to light fires. We urge them to be cautious,” he said.
In the mean time the CPF has provided lunch for those living at the informal settlement today.

The CPF also made arrangements for a collection point at 1356 Old North Coast Road, Liberty Hall; for anyone who would like to donate items.
Ward 34 Councillor Bobby Maharajh, said the affected families had “lost everything” in the fire and donations of food, blankets, clothing and bedding would be most welcome.
He said he was saddened to hear that a mother and child had lost their lives and that numerous families have been left without shelter.
“I am currently working with outside sources to help the families,” he said.
When asked where the destitute families would sleep tonight, Maharajh said Disaster Management has been notified and he was currently waiting on them for a plan of action.
