Man linked to north Durban robbery sentenced to five years

Lindani Mngoma (26) was sentenced at the Durban Regional Court.

A SUSPECT who escaped from police custody was sentenced to five years in prison recently in a judgement handed down at the Durban Regional Court.

Lindani Mngoma (26) was sentenced for escaping from lawful custody, confirmed police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala.

“On December 18, 2020, Mngoma escaped from police custody in Greenwood Park after he was arrested for house robbery. He was later arrested with the assistance of the K9 Unit and the private security company. He was denied bail at court until his sentence. The case of robbery where the accused was charged was withdrawn at court,” Gwala said.

In other court news, Gwala also commented on the arrest of a 48-year-old man and his five co-accused who were arrested on charges for fraudulently selling houses that did not belong to them.

“It is alleged that a 48-year-old man who is the mastermind behind the scam would post an advert newspapers that his company was building houses at a reduced fee. He would defraud the unsuspecting clients and disappear after a deposit was made.

“He was operating his fraud business at Durban CBD, Point, Pietermaritzburg, Kokstad and other areas where he had defrauded people since 2013. The five co-accused were assisting him in running the business around the province,” she said.

The accused are due to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on fraud charges.
