Fairways residents angered over mess left behind by beachgoers

Residents say some of the beachgoers have been seen defecating on verges.

PUBLIC disturbance, glass bottles and litter strewn across the beach are some of the issues Fairways residents have to deal with over weekends. The issue has only been exacerbated by the influx of holidaymakers.

Guesthouse owner, Aubrey van Greunen said beachgoers, who frequent Beachwood at night, are unruly and leave behind a mess that residents have to clean up on a daily basis.

Piles of litter is strewn across Beachwood.

“This has been happening on most weekends for the past seven years. Each year, when the festive season starts, it turns into utter chaos. The disruptive parties, the mess and the bottles and broken glass have gotten out of hand,” he said

He added that some of his guests have had accidents on the beach where they sustained lacerations to their feet after stepping on broken glass.

“There is no policing at all on Beachwood. We have asked the City and other authorities for their presence, but none have been forthcoming, he said.

Van Greunen added that other areas, such as Ballito and eMdloti, are well policed and he would like the same for Beachwood.

“At other beaches there is signage with the rules of the beach, and officials who monitor how many people have entered. Once they have reached a certain capacity, nobody else can enter. We would like the same sort of rules for Beachwood,” he said.

Ingrid Moolman, a homeowner in the area, said Beachwood was a small and could not handle the influx of people that are using it as a party venue.

“There is no problem with people using the beach. However, it is not equipped for social gatherings of this nature,” she said.

“They even come with generators for their loud speakers and they carry on till early hours of the morning. We still have a curfew, which is not being honoured,” said Moolman.

She added that there are no shark nets in place, no life guards present, no ablution facilities and the on-site bins were not large enough to accommodate the amount of trash generated.

“I have witnessed people defecating on the verge. The rates we pay are steep, so we would like the eThekwini Municipality to listen to our pleas,” she said.

The eThekwini Municipality failed to comment at the time of publishing.
