Concern over fallen streetlight in Somerset Park

Despite lying flat on the ground, the street light still comes on at night.

A SOMERSET Park resident has exhausted all options in efforts to get the eThekwini Municipality to fix a fallen streetlight.

Shikar Balkaran, who lives on Midsomer Crescent said the streetlight has been lying on his verge since October last year.

What’s more, the streetlight, despite lying flat on the ground, still comes on at night.

“The streetlight fell in the first week of October 2021. When it initially fell over it blocked part of my driveway, I had to then move it onto the verge which is where it is currently. I’ve reported it numerous times and every time I’ve called through with a reference number, I’ve been told someone will be sent out.

“However, to date, almost five months later, the light still has not been repaired. I’ve even contacted our ward councillor, Nicole Bollman who has tried her best but there just hasn’t been any response from the eThekwini Municipality,” he said.

Balkaran said he is concerned for walkers, domestic workers who walk in the area as there is a live wire.

“The fact that the light works at night shows there is a live wire. The wires are also clearly visible at the base of the pole. All I’m asking for is for the light to be fixed. I’ve even had other residents ring the intercom to ask if I’d reported the streetlight,” he said.
