No talking at autism acceptance event in Parkhill
To commemorate World Autism Month, Action in Autism invites all to pledge to be non-speaking and participate in a sensory experience at the centre this Saturday.
THE month of April, which is World Autism Month, has been dedicated to autistic people to celebrate their achievements and highlight the challenges they face.
In light of this Action in Autism in Parkhill invite all to pledge to be non-speaking and participate in a sensory heaven experience at the Centre at 105 Haig Road this Saturday, April 9 at 10:00.

“The month can be a difficult time for autistic people and those who support them. Typically people highlight the condition through out-moded symbols such as puzzle pieces and colour. Parents speak about how exhausting it is to raise an autistic child and this can be very triggering for the autistic community who would simply like to be accepted, supported, and included in society,” said Kirsten Miller, director for Action in Autism.
Signs, gestures, pointing, tapping or drawing will be the only permissible form of communication for the duration of the event.
A foam pit, ball pond, lycra swing, trampolines and other sensory input will be available for use.
“There is no prescribed fee, but a donation of R50 per family would be highly appreciated. Action in Autism does not receive funding from government and relies on donations and support from the community for the running of their services,” said Miller.
